BANOŠTOR GRAPE DAYS 2011

Banoštor village differs from any other village in Vojvodina because it's the place where Mt. Fruška Gora and the Danube merge together, one can drink both wine and brandy and it is still possible to cross onto the other bank of the Danube by ferry.

And Banoštor Grape Days have been taking place in Banoštor for 15 years already - the feast dedicated to grapes, wine and vinegrowers. This year's event was held in the period from 2nd to 4th September, 2011. Organizers of this event were the local community of Banoštor and Vinegrowers and Wine-makers' Club "St. Tryphon" from Banoštor.

On the northern slopes of Mt Fruška Gora, grapes ripen earlier than in other wine regions, primarily owing to the proximity of the Danube and effects caused by reflection of the sun on the water surface of the Danube. For that reason, Banoštor Grape Days are the first event in Serbia which announces the beginning of the new grape-picking season.

Banoštor Grape Days are surely worth a  visit and we warmly recommend them because you will find there all Banoštor's wineries assembled together at one place. The exhibition of Banoštor wineries is the major event, where one can taste and buy local wines. The atmosphere of the place reveals that inhabitants of Banoštor and Banoštor wineries take great pride in keeping the tradition of Banoštor Grape Days alive and presenting every year their new wines and showing their knowledge of wine-making. And as accompanying programme, one can also visit handicraft exhibition organized by villagers' associations, traditional  local dance and song concerts performed by dance & singing groups. Tambura-players from Deronje are in charge of spicing up the festive atmosphere, and if you start feeling peckish, don't miss the Pudarski  Paprikaš (Vineyard Watchman's Stew) cooking contest.

Concerning wine prizes, the title of the best white wine on the exhibition was awarded to wine from Vinarium Winery. In the category of red wines, the award was given to Šijački Winery. Mr. Jovan Stojković  from Banoštor was also rewarded as the best grape producer.

This year, during Banoštor Grape Days, you could also visit the exhibition "Tradition of Harvesting Banoštor Jewel" in the premises of Mother's Handicraft Workshop, which presented photos of local wine-makers and vinegrowers, as well as traditional tools and machines used in grape processing and wine production, and traditional pots and glassware for serving and storing wine in a typical rural household.
