RECORD HIGH NUMBER OF BALKAN WINES AT BIWC 2022

More than 1,000 wines from 280 wineries will compete for awards at this year's edition of The Balkans International Wine Competition (BIWC). Winemakers from Bulgaria, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the area of Kosovo and Metohija, Romania, Croatia, Albania, Slovenia, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Montenegro and Ukraine sent their wines for evaluation.

A jury composed of prestigious international wine experts, including 5 holders of the Master of Wine title, will participate in the search for the best wines.

Igor Luković, the president of this competition, emphasizes that he is looking forward to coming to the paradise island of Salamis in order to evaluate the best wines of the Balkans together with his colleagues. "For the first time, I will have the role of chairman of the judging and it is truly an honor to be part of such a prestigious team! This year, we have expanded the composition of the jury with new world-class wine judges, so I am sure that the judging itself will be exceptional," adds Luković, president of the BIWC .

The winners of the Balkan Wine Oscars will be announced on June 3rd at a ceremony in Ktima Filipikon in Salamis. The most attractive prize is certainly the Trophy for the best wine in the Balkans and the best winery in the Balkans. But this year, for the first time, the Golden Dionysius, the award for the best Greek wine at the judging, will be awarded and it will be presented to the winner by the mayor of Salamis, Mr. Panagopoulos.

"Salamis is ready to welcome the BIWC international jury at the beginning of June. We are proud that the organizers trusted us to hold the 11th edition of this competition on our island. As a popular tourist and cultural destination, Salamis and its inhabitants will welcome our wine guests with open arms . Welcome!", emphasizes Mr. Panagopoulos, the mayor of Salamis.

"I am extremely proud that year after year the BIWC competition is experiencing increasing interest in the region. In 2022, we reached a new record high for the number of participating wineries, and I am convinced that we will witness an even higher quality of wines at the competition. Now we can be sure that we have a world wine superpower in the region, said Galina Niforou", director of BIWC.

Exhibitors also show great interest in the upcoming 11th edition of the Balkan Wine Festival. Traditionally, this event gathers a large number of wines and wineries in one place in a kind of wine city in front of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia in the period from June 16th to June 18th.
