On October 22nd, 2019, the Hilton Hotel in Belgrade welcomed local sommeliers, wine merchants, importers and representatives of the HORECA sector who came to a tasting workshop and presentation of Spanish wines and to get acquainted with Spanish wine regions and styles. The workshop was led by Aleksandar Duković, DipWSET.
Among presented wines, attendees could taste two Cavas, Spanish traditional method sparkling wine, as well as young white wines made from Albarino and Verdejo varieties. Diversity of Spanish wines is demonstrated by a line-up of red wines ranging from Garnacha, Mencia from vineyards over 100 years old, through Tempranillo aged in barrique, to blends dominated by Monastrell, Maturana Tinta and Graciano. The tasting was brought to a close with a hard-to-find-in-Belgrade wine: Sherry from Jerez.
"It is little known that Spain is the world's largest exporter and the third wine producer, while it is also ranked first in the world for total surface covered with vineyards, totalling nearly one million hectares. In Serbia, Spanish wine is still relatively unknown, largely associated with wine regions of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. We want these educational events to contribute to better knowledge of Serbian wine lovers about varieties and qualities of wine from other regions of Spain and to help discover a really large treasure trove of flavours from our country, "said the Economic Advisor and Head of the Economic and Trade Department of the Embassy of Spain in Belgrade, Mr. Javier Alvares.
