WINE DAY - Niš 24.03.2012

The city of Maribor in Slovenia is unique and famous for its "Old Trta" - the oldest grape vine in the world. Experts have proven that this vine is more than four centuries old, so it entered the Guiness Book of Records 8 years ago. "The Old Trta" bears about 50 kilograms of grapes every year, which are used to produce wine with exceptional collectors' value.

As a symbol of many years of mutual frienship and cooperation between the cities of Maribor and Niš, city officials from Maribor have decided to give a special present to the city of Niš - a graft of the oldest grape vine in the world.

On Friday, 23rd March, 2012, at 12 h, the planting of Old Trta graft was celebrated in the church-yard of St Painteleimon's Church in Niš with music/cultural programme organized by the Students' Cultural Centre in Niš.

On the following day, on 24th March, 2012, starting at 11 o'clock, the Wine Day- the fair of wine and brandy accompanied with presentation of vinegrowing and wine-making tradition of Niš as well as brandy & wine tastings, was held. This event took place at the Exhibition Pavillion inside the Fortress of Niš.
