GOLDEN FRANKOVKA FROM SERBIA

Merely visiting the region of Central Europe is not sufficient if you want to understand better its history, spirit and heritage of this cultural cradle. One needs to to taste the flavors and aromas of this vast region where so many nationalities live together. One of the symbols of Central Europe is Frankovka (Kékfrankos, Blaufränkisch), the grape variety which shows nowadays authentic wines of exceptional quality.

Every year, the Hungarian magazine Péczi Borozó organizes the Kekfrankos Grand Tasting, where samples of Frankovka from all Central European countries are presented before an international jury.

This year, 122 samples of Frankovka wines from 7 countries of the region arrived for evaluation in the Hungarian town of Harkány. Looking at countries, majority of the samples (88) came from Hungary. Serbia was represented by 2 Frankovka wines from Vinum and Bora wineries. Bora Winery from the village of Lepojević in Levač produces Frankovka from grapes originating from an old vineyard planted in 1963.

Unfortunately, the status of Frankovka in Serbia is still inconsistent with its qualities. It is somewhat similar to Prokupac in character, and even in terms of the total vineyard surface they are close, but Frankovka is still waiting to experience the popularity that Prokupac has gained over the last decade. Such wine competitions and tasting events certainly contribute to the fact that Frankovka wines draw attention to themselves, especially because they are wines of excellent quality.

The champions of this year's Frankovka Grand Tasting evaluation with 95 points are the following wines:

Pálffy Szőlőbirtok és Pince Káli Királyi Kékfrankos 2017 (Balaton, Hungary)

Vina Belje Frankovka 2012 (Danube, Croatia)

Vinska Klet Prus Modra Frankinja Barrique 2016 (Bela Krajina, Slovenia)

Here are Serbian Frankovka wines that won gold medals:

Frenk 2019 - Vinarija Bora (Levač, Tri Morave)

Frankovka 2020 - Vinarija Vinum (Fruška Gora, Srem)
