NIŠAVA

Nišava wine region extends into the valley of the Nišava River. Nišava wine region comprises three sub-regions: Bela Palanka, Pirot and Babušnica.

According to 2012 data, there are 471 ha of vineyards in Nišava region, with the largest areas under vineyards in Pirot.

The vineyards spread at the altitudes ranging from 320 to 550 meters, on steep, moderately steep and gentle slopes. In terms of vineyard exposure, southern and southeastern exposures predominate.

Soil: The most common soil types in Nišava region are vertisol and fluvisol, whilst other types of soil (loess, eutric cambisol, lithosol,  etc.) can also be found to a lesser extent.

The moderating factors affecting the local climate are the Balkan Mountains (Svrljig mountains, Vidlič, Vlaška planina, Suva planina) that surround the region from all sides and the Nišava River.

Grape Producers: In this wine region, 3,598 households own vineyards. Most vineyards are located in the vicinity of Pirot.

Varieties: Vranac, Prokupac, Plovdina, Muscat Hamburg, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Italian Riesling, Smederevka
