GOLDEN WINE DAY 2011 - SREMSKA MITROVICA

An International Wine Event "Golden Wine Day" was held on 19th August, 2011 for the first time in the Imperial Palace at Sirmium, in the city of Sremska Mitrovica, i.e. at the exact location where Roman Emperor Probus began his mission of fostering viticulture and vine-growing in these regions. The event was organized by the Association of Wine Enthusiasts "Marcus Aurelius Probus". This event is symbolically taking place on Probus's birthday- 19th August. About 25 wineries exhibited their wines.

It was truly fascinating to tour this valuable archaeological site and alongside visit stands of wine producers from Serbia and Hungary and taste their wines.

The opening speech was given by the Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica who pointed out local community's commitment  to make this event traditional.

Also, a wine cradle "Cunnabula" was set up in the cellars of the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments with an intention to create a collection of archive wines from all over the world. And the first bottle for the future collection was donated by Mother Antonina, prioress of Petkovica Monastery on Mt. Fruška Gora, famous for production of excellent wines.
